The innovation of Open-60
yacht design has prompted an explosion of new syndicates and new races. A
record 31 Open-60s recently entered a race across the Atlantic. The Open-60
class leads the sport of offshore sailing in cutting edge technology,
innovation, and discovery. They are at
the forefront of developing faster, safer, stronger platforms for a
fleet of competitors who challenge themselves to perfect strategy, weather
interpretation, navigation, sleep deprivation, endurance, technology and
communication.
EDS Atlantic Challenge
(Race 1)
Sir Chay
Blyth’s new crewed race between Europe and the U.S. for
Open-60 class yachts. From St. Malo, France to Hamburg, Germany,
back to Portsmouth, England, across the Atlantic to Baltimore
before heading north to Boston and back to St. Malo.
The Gold Race (Race 2)
A challenging crewed race in
honor of the old clipper ships during the California gold rush travels from New
York to San Francisco, around Cape Horn.
California Challenge
(Race 3)
A compliment to the Gold
Race, this newly developed crewed race will travel south along the California
Coast to Mexico.
Around Alone 2002-2003
(Race 4)
Known as “the longest race
on earth for an individual in any sport”™ Around Alone is a solo,
round-the-world yacht race. Traveling
from the East Coast of the U.S., the 27,000 mile race travels to Cape Town,
South Africa, Auckland, New Zealand, around Cape Horn to Punta del Este,
Uruguay, and finally back to the original port of Charleston, South Carolina.
Transat Jacques Vabre
(Race 5)
A double-handed race from Le
Havre, France to Brazil attracting a diverse fleet of competition. The Open-60 monohull class is accentuated by
a fleet of Grand Prix 60-foot trimarans in the race.
Europe 1 New Man Star
(Race 6)
The Grandfather of solo
transoceanic races (formerly called the OSTAR) began in 1960 with 5 pioneering
yachtsmen. 71 competition yachts
entered the 2000 race, and brought a strong contingent of international
professionals on Open-60 monohulls and trimarans.
Quebec-St. Malo (Race 7)
A crewed race from Canada to
St. Malo, France following the solo Europe 1 New Man Star race.
