Mission Statement:
One man. One Boat. Around
the World. Alone.
Brad
Van Liew, 33, will sail in a grueling solo race around
the globe. Facing a fierce international fleet of the world's
best sailors, Van Liew will be a favorite to win based on
his experience, skill and fortitude. His winning state-of-the-art
Open-50 competition yacht will reach screaming speeds of
30 knots (35 MPH), racing through Mother Nature's toughest
conditions. The Around Alone
yacht race is the world's longest race for an individual
in any sport.
Often compared
to Formula One auto racing, offshore sailing requires athletic
prowess, comprehensive teamwork and advanced technology.
The racing is nonstop, with no comforts, no brakes and no
rest. It is the ultimate test of physical and mental endurance.
Aboard a radically designed 50-foot sailboat, Van Liew will
fulfill the role of sailor, electrician, navigator, router,
weather interpreter, and tactician. He will take a few minutes
each day to eat, and sleep in short naps of 30 minutes.
For months at a time, his life will revolve around the simple
goal of extreme performance.
"It has
always been my dream to win the Around Alone," said
Van Liew. "It is not about glory or reward. I race
to push the envelope of human achievement - to test my mind,
body and soul, and to represent America in this world renown
sport."
Van Liew was
the sole American to finish the Around Alone race of 1998-99.
Aboard his yacht, Balance Bar, he constantly swapped
places with race leaders, taking 3rd place in the 50-foot
class after nine months of racing. This was an extraordinary
accomplishment considering that 6,000 miles from the finish
line he lost his entire rig and sails to a nasty storm off
South America. His determination and skill was evident to
all!
