Scattered efforts have struggled to gain the kind of mainstream media exposure necessary to form the foundation of a truly sustainable effort to bring solo ocean racing to the North American audience.
Brad Van Liew's 1998/1999 and 2002/03 Around Alone campaigns proved that the mainstream North American public could develop an interest in 'adventure racing.' Brad's constant updates from wild and remote oceans captivated the public and landed him in front of major network TV cameras on NBC, CBS, and ABC. Thousands of school children followed his adventures every day, while millions of readers of publications like the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, San Diego Tribune, Outside Magazine, and Sports Illustrated watched Brad and Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America win his class convincingly while setting class records that stand today.
North American shorthanded sailing needs proven winners and personalities that can garner international media attention. With the Transat 650 Class (Mini) and the Class 40 experiencing strong growth on our shores, and progressive organizations like the Singlehanded Sailing Society and Great Lakes Singlehanded Society making great strides to further interest in the sport, there has never been a better time to bring new awareness to this kind of racing.
Brad and his team have been able to arrange initial funding for his Velux 5 Oceans campaign, allowing them to purchase an incredible Open 60 racing machine with a great pedigree.
