LAZARUS PROJECT

Jeffrey Wargo is an experienced offshore sailor with a solid eighteen year history of racing and preparing race boats for competition. He was Brad’s Project Manager in the Around Alone Race 2002/03 with a first Place victory in every leg of the event and a world record for mileage covered in 24-hours. As Brad is sailing, Jeffrey is preparing for the arrival, repair, maintenance and reconditioning needed to win the next leg. From sails, to deck layout, electronics and keel mechanics, Jeffrey is Brad’s partner in making sure the race boat is prepared for the rigors of any conditions at sea. His own sailing resume includes racing on the Kialoas under Jim Kilroy, The Race 2000 under Cam Lewis, Team Dennis Connor 2001, Brad’s Around Alone victory of 2002/03 and several other crewed and solo endeavors. Brad Van Liew is a premier offshore sailor specializing in extreme performance events. He has competed in some of the world's toughest offshore ocean races, which require courage, grit, skill and teamwork. For the Velux 5 Oceans Race 2010/11, Brad has created a dynamic team of resources that compliment his experience and reinforce his determination. He is a race veteran, having completed both the 1998/99 Around Alone event (third place Open 50 Class) and 2002/03 (first place Open 50 Class). He has been recognized by several organizations for his sportsmanship, seamanship, communications and competitiveness. Now, Brad returns to the Velux 5 Oceans Race (previously Around Alone), excited about the new Eco 60 Class and anticipating a rugged international fleet of the most talented solo sailors. Brad’s sailing resume is diverse and expansive, including everything from Newport to Bermuda races at the young age of twelve to Open-60 regattas. A self-described adrenaline junky, Brad is active in offroad motorcycling, horseback riding, hunting, SCUBA, and also boasts a multi-engine commercial pilot license. Brad is a graduate of the University of Southern California and a member of the California Yacht Club and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. He resides in Mt. JC Caso JC Caso began his professional sailing career in 1992 sailing Pen Duick 6in a transatlantic crossing. He has successfully managed four VendéGlobe projects since 1996 and was shore support for Around Alone competitors (now Velux 5 Oceans) in 1998/99 and 2002/03, when Bernard Stamm won the race in the Open 60 division. In 1998/99 JC was shore support for Marc Thiercelin’s Open 60 Somewhere, when Brad Van Liew was dismasted in the Southern Ocean. It was JC that rallied fellow teams (and rivals) to contribute to Brad’s efforts to get back in the race, making him a key component in the recovery and Brad’s third place finish in 1999, despite the dismasting. JC has a hefty racing resume himself, with races including the Mini Transat, Figaro, Jacques Vabre, Quebec-St. Malo and several transatlantics. Meaghan Van Liew manages the sponsorship, marketing and PR for the team. She has spearheaded sponsorship acquisition efforts for two separate round-the-world racing campaigns, developing key corporate contacts within the international business community. Meaghan has negotiated marquee sponsorship contracts with Tommy Hilfiger, Nextel, Panasonic, Honeywell, Samson, Beefeater, Balance Bar, and several other prominent corporations. She has also developed comprehensive PR strategies associated with each sponsorship and implemented these plans resulting in vast media exposure. The media success has been complimented by dynamic branding and corporate hospitality opportunities. Meaghan has an undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California and an M.B.A. from The Marshall School of Business at USC.

Dr. Kevin Hogan is a volunteer crew member focusing on logistics and operations. He began sailing in 1977 and has logged over 45,000 nautical miles at sea. He began his sailing career in the 1980’s crewing on sailboats in the Great Lakes and eventually competing twice in the Charleston to Bermuda event. He is a dentist residing in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
